Car PCM Changes
Here I'll keep track of the journey through the GM PCM....... really got you attention, huh? Anyway, it's a place for me to document things I've tried and found to work on not work and maybe you can use some of the info that I'm learning. I'm no expert at tuning, I know computers very well (I manage computer networks) but automotive computers, that's another story. Fortunately, I downloaded Freescan for all my realtime data and data capture and purchased Tuner CAT and with tuning help from MadZ28.Com, now have the ability to tune and change till my hearts content. Anyway, it's a new adventure! (Note: I now have DataMaster for my data capture, hadn't bought it yet so I only get 20 sessions before it quits working.)

- Just got everything installed a couple of days ago. Figuring out all the tables can be a challenge. The reason for this change was to see if my 2-1 downshift would be softer. I autocross and don't want a slam me through the windshield downshift. I won't know anything until the new transmission gets installed. I don't even have my cable yet.

ECM Constants Table, Kickdown Enable Was (default) 94.5 now 92.5 Disable was 89.5 now 87.5
Downshift pressure for 2-1 downshift went from all 0's to:

24 - -10
28 - -15
32 - -20
36 - -20
40 - -33
44 - -43
48 through 64 are all -48

- Cable arrived today. Got the new flash in it today for the first time. I made a couple of changes. The speedo calc was off a little and instead of being set to the 275 size it's now set according to the spec from the AVS db tire which is 810 revs/mile. Also changes the cooling fans to the following:

Fan 1 On Threshold Low MPH - 78c (174F)
Fan 1 On Threshold High MPH - 80c (176F)
Fan 2 On Threshold Low MPH - 85c (185F)
Fan 2 On Threshold High MPH - 87c (189F)

I captured a data stream from FreeScan today to an Excel spreadsheet. REALLY nice to see exactly what's going on inside the computer and how it adjusts and controls things. Of course I'm only running on 2nd and 3rd gear still. Transmission arrived today, just waiting on the torque converter.

- Drove in today with the new fan settings. Temp outside (MAT temp) was 72 or so, car ran 177-185 even with those cool temps. I know this temp is higher than what the gauge shows. I'm making another change to make them not run quite so much. These are the changes:

Fan 1 On Threshold Low MPH - 80c (176F) +2 degrees
Fan 1 On Threshold High MPH - 83c (181.4F) +5.4 degrees
Fan 2 On Threshold Low MPH - 85c (185F)
Fan 2 On Threshold High MPH - 87c (189F)

I also changed the Fan Hysteresis, both low and high to 4 degrees from 3.

Here is what I averaged in my 30 minute drive to work for the first time with MadZ28's flash.
122.3338233 - 123.5861286 - 126.0566618 - 126.2377389
BLM Left BLM Right Integrator Left Integrator Right
Pretty consistant left to right but it appears the computer is trying to lean things out a little bit. I'll keep an eye out on it and see if it stabilizes over the next 50 or 60 miles.

It really did feel better today. Smoother, especially in the mid-range. And obviously ran quite a bit cooler, I didn't have the computer attached but according to what I saw yesterday, I ran about 185 running various places this afternoon in stop and go traffic, and it was steady (Temps in upper 80's-90). So that's working! OF course, I still only have two gears.... I'm not going to flash the cooling changes just yet. I want to get more of a feel of what it's like the way it is now and after the transmission and torque converter go in. I wish I had some times for my car so I could compare before and after.

Got the new transmission and torque converter in today. I need to adjust all of my shift points. It's shifting way too early. I'm changing the normal and performance upshift/downshift points by 4 mph starting at 18.8% TPS. Also changing (constants table) the Kickdown mode enable TPS threshold from 92.6% to 85% and the disable to 80% from 87.5%

New shift points work MUCH better. It keeps the car out of stall more and it feels much more responsive. I'm going to try this for while. I need to work on the TCC lock-up to make sure it locks a little earlier, at least at less than 30%-40% TPS. I'm changing the 2 >1 downshift pressure. I was using the same numbers as the 3-2 but I scaled them, multiplied by 2 so if I need to change it back, multiply by .5

Ion told me to change the Kickdown Mode Up/Down shift points for my rpm shift points. Stock (up) is this:
1-2 --36
2-3 --73
3-4 --126

I'm changing to:
1-2 -- 43
2-3 -- 81

One more change.
TCC Performance Mode Engage MPH vs Gear vs %TPS
Changed everything down by 10mph

TCC Performance Mode Release MPH vs Gear vs %TPS
Changed everything down 10 mph

Just a revision to the shift points. They are now:
1-2 -- 40
2-3 -- 79

I'm adding one degree to the Extended Spark Advance Vs. RPM Vs. MAP for 90, 95 and 100KPA. I'm going to try DataMaster to get a log and send it to Ion and let him see what he can do different. I'm getting zero knock reduction and I'd just like to see if I'm getting ENOUGH spark. I'll add until I get a little and then back it down until it goes away. (Used DataMaster #1)

I'm changing the TCC Performance Mode Release MPH vs Gear vs %TPS to the same
thing the Cruise mode table is set for. Should cause the torque converter to lock up a little
sooner for everyday driving.

It will be set to these seetings for both 3rd and 4th gear
00.0 - 42
06.3 - 42
12.5 - 42
18.8 - 42
25.0 - 46
31.3 - 48
37.5 - 65
43.8 - 77

from

00.0 - 45 50
06.3 - 45 50
12.5 - 45 50
18.8 - 48 50
25.0 - 50 50

My transmission was shifting WAY to hard on 1-2 shifts. I even ripped the
transmission mount out. Sooo, had to find a way to ease it up a little.
So, the table to change is the Line Pressure Offset vs % TPS (Normal Mode).
I dropped the 2 gear numbers by 25% (multiplied them by .75) to get the numbers
I now have. Much better now. I might even try 30%. It's much more "street" friendly now.
